Leafy stems were placed on the fire and the resulting fumes were inhaled for a cold or runny nose.  The fresh leaves were chewed for a cough.  More often, it was pounded a bit, boiled in water for ten to fifteen minutes or twenty minutes and then cooled and drunk.  The usual dose, a cupful, was taken before breakfast and again after supper.  This treatment was continued until the cold was gone, usually in two or three days.
